You are very right, there is a thin flat cable connecting to the screen, this cable you can inspect by removing the plastic rails on both sides of the phone, this will “unhinge” the whole screen bit. However, since this cable is either loose in one of the ends or has one of it’s copper lines severed, you might want to send it in for repair. Probably wont cost much

Do you know the problem, where the screen is black. But you can still call, talk and use the phone. But only the screen is black and dead. Think its called the Flex-cable or something, can you fix this?
